IMA enables external MA & internships at CERN

The Department of Reliability Engineering maintains close professional exchange with CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). The world's largest particle accelerator, the LHC (Large Hardon Collider, see Figure 1), where particle experiments are conducted using multiple detectors, is also referred to as the "most complex machine in the world." However, experiments can only be carried out when the facility is available. Therefore, failures, not only lead to financial problems but also impair research operations significantly. As part of our cooperation agreement with CERN, students specializing in reliability engineering have the opportunity to complete internships at CERN or conduct their thesis work on-site. The specific areas of focus cover a broad spectrum of reliability activities related to particle accelerators. This includes, for example, the application of risk management methods in the development of the FCC (Future Hadron Collider) or radiation detection and monitoring using the CROME system, specifically developed at CERN (see Figure 2).
