Student excursion to ADMEDES

What does a laser have to do with blood flow? Recently, a group of our students got an insight into fascinating applications of laser technology at ADMEDES in Pforzheim – for example in heart stents.

A heart stent is a tiny, flexible metal mesh tube that’s placed in a coronary artery during angioplasty to keep it open. Obviously, the standards are high for such a crucial implant that must stay in place to keep blood flowing. ADMEDES GmbH is a global manufacturer of heart stents, using high-precision laser processes.

In the context of lectures, a group of our students recently enjoyed a tailored program, including:

  • an introduction to the company and how laser is used,
  • a tour through four different departments, focusing on lasers,
  • and a specific talk on career opportunities and the chance to ask questions.

Founded in 1996, the headquarters of ADMEDES is in Pforzheim, just a short journey from Stuttgart. Industry visits like this are a regular highlight of each semester at IFSW. It’s an exciting example of the advantage of studying in close range of (and potentially in collaboration with) world-leading industry partners.

Thanks again to ADMEDES. Visit their website to learn more about what they do.
